Startups in Hong Kong Reach Record High

Hong Kong athletes displayed their extraordinary capability at the Tokyo 2020 Olympic and Paralympic Games.

At the Tokyo Olympics, Hong Kong delegation brought home six medals including one gold, two silver and three bronze, the best results in Hong Kong history.

Hong Kong fencer Edgar Cheung won the gold medal in the Men’s Foil Individual competition.  This is Hong Kong’s first Olympic medal in fencing.  It is also the first Olympic gold after the establishment of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region and the city’s second gold medal after the one at the Atlanta 1996 Olympic Games.

Hong Kong swimmer Siobhan Haughey nabbed two silver medals in the Women’s 200m Freestyle and Women’s 100m Freestyle.  She becomes the first Hong Kong athlete to clinch two medals at the same Olympic Games.  She also set new Asian records in both the Women’s 100m and 200m Freestyle events in the games.

Table tennis athletes Lee Ho-ching, Doo Hoi-kem, Soo Wai-yam and Zhu Chengzhu claimed bronze in the Women’s table tennis match.  Karate athlete Grace Lau took home the bronze medal in the Women’s Kata event.

Cyclist Lee Wai-sze grabbed an Olympic bronze in the Women’s Sprint.  She is the first Hong Kong world champion in women’s cycling competitions.  As a full-time athlete since 2004, she has brought Hong Kong honor in the international sporting arena with outstanding results.

At the Tokyo Paralympic Games, Hong Kong athletes clinched five medals, comprising two silver and three bronze.

Chu Man-kai won a silver medal in the Badminton Men’s Singles SH6 event, Daniel Chan scored a bronze medal in the Men’s Singles WH2 event.  This was the first time that badminton was included in the official sport at this Games.  With the medals, Chu Man-kai and Daniel Chan made history in Hong Kong sports.

Leung Yuk-wing, Vivian Lau and Wong Kwan-hang claimed a silver medal in the Boccia Mixed BC4 Pairs event.  This silver was Leung Yuk-wing’s second medal at these Games.  He claimed a bronze medal in the Boccia Mixed Individual BC4 event earlier at the Games.

The Hong Kong athletes displayed their unwavering determination and perseverance as well as Hong Kong’s can-do spirit at the Games.

The Chief Executive Mrs Carrie Lam noted that the Government has been proactively allocating resources to develop elite sports in the past decade or so, and that it would make continuing efforts to further its support for sports development.  Its initiatives include enhancing facilities for training athletes, establishing a fund to enhance athletes ‘competitiveness, strengthening participation in sports and its development at the school level, boosting support for elite athletes’ dual career development in sports and academic pursuits and promoting the sports industry’s development.
