Hong Kong composer Alfred Wong Hok Yeung's composition Night Poem III recently had its world premiere at the Fresno International Cello Festival Gala Concert. The piece was performed again at a recital held at the office of the Hong Kong Economic and Trade Office in San Francisco on November 4. During the recital, the audience enjoyed Dr. Ka Wai Yu (cello) and Alfred Wong (piano) performing pieces composed by both Wong and Yu.
Born in Hong Kong, Alfred Wong’s music has been widely performed in many international music events. His accolades include the ‘2014 CASH Golden Sail Music Awards’ – Best Serious Composition; a Bronze award in the ‘Xinyi Cup’ assessment of works for Chinese orchestra by young composers, jointly presented by the Art department of the Ministry of Culture of China and the China Nationalities Orchestra Society. Some of his works have been recorded by PARMA Recordings (U.S.) and Hugo Productions (HK) Limited.
Dr. Ka-Wai Yu was the featured cello soloist performing Night Poem III with the Fresno State Symphony Orchestra, conducted by Cello Fresno Director Dr Thomas Loewenheim at the Fresno International Cello Festival Gala Concert. Originally from Hong Kong, Dr. Yu is Assistant Professor of Music at Dixie State University, where he teaches cello and directs the string chamber music program.
