Mega Bridge Opens

The Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macao Bridge – the world’s longest sea crossing – opened to traffic on October 24.

A masterpiece of engineering, the 55 km mega bridge features a dual 3-lane carriageway, with a 23 km sea viaduct and 7 km sub-sea tunnel which allows the passage of giant container vessels in the busy Pearl River Estuary. It is about 20 times the length of San Francisco’s Golden Gate Bridge. Engineers used innovative methods for environmental protection and unique building techniques to overcome project challenges. Construction took nine years.

The bridge brings the three cities within an hour’s commute and most major towns and cities of the western Pearl River Delta (PRD) within a 3-hour commute of Hong Kong. It will foster the flow of people, goods and capital and integrate the prosperous Greater Bay Area, encompassing Guangdong province, Hong Kong and Macao, and strengthen Hong Kong’s position as a trade and logistics hub.
