The Hong Kong Special Administrative Region Government would continue to work closely with the electronic industry, the photovoltaic (PV) industry and other relevant parties to promote research and development in solar energy, said the Commissioner for Innovation and Technology, Mr. Eddy Chan in April.

Addressing a conference on “Solar Photovoltaic Energy (PV)-From Technology to Business Opportunities” at the Hong Kong Electronic Fair (Spring Edition) 2009, Mr. Chan said the Government would also promote and facilitate the wider use of PV and cleaner and greener energy.

Mr. Chan noted that building-integrated photovoltaics had become one of the fastest growing segments within the fast growing PV industry.

“The Hong Kong Science and Technology Parks Corporation has decided to establish a new cluster on Green Tech in the Science Park focusing on renewable energy and environmental technologies. Solar energy will be one of the key elements of the new cluster,” said Mr. Chan.

“Besides putting in place infrastructural facilities, the Government also provides funding support through the Innovation and Technology Fund to encourage applied R&D facilities,” he added.

To strengthen its edge as a gateway to the Mainland market, Hong Kong had established various collaboration programs with Mainland authorities in the areas of innovation and technological development, Mr. Chan said.

He added, “By combining our strengths with those of Shenzhen, we have successfully attracted DuPont Apollo to locate its global R&D Centre in Hong Kong and its production facilities in Shenzhen. This is a winning model we know will continue to attract other leading international companies and talent to this region.”
